Culinary New Zealand has a lot to offer. As usual in the USA the New Zealanders love barbecue. Sitting outside and barbecuing in summer is not only a culinary but also a social highlight. Beside grilled lamb, oysters belong to the typical New Zealand dishes. But the English heritage “Fish & Chips” should not be missing. Of course, we tried it out. Especially after a day at the lake in the sun, a fish and chips picnic is exactly the right thing. Most of the restaurants, cafes and bars we tried are in the Taupõ area, as we were there most of the time. Eating out in New Zealand is easy and delicious with this guide!
The great New Zealand Travel Guide with all activities, destinations, tours and much more can be found here:
Typical New Zealand cuisine. Some dishes are served directly on the hot stone. Especially the lamb specialties are excellent and there is a wide range of New Zealand craft beers.
Probably the best vegetarian burger I ever ate. The small diner shines through its good selection of burgers, which not only want to be stylish in their variation, but above all delicious.
The resort’s own restaurant offers a la carte alternating typical New Zealand dishes. The hotel often serves buffet meals in the restaurant. Both the Mexican buffet and the menu were delicious. In a nice atmosphere you can have a chic dinner in the evening.
For every Fish & Chips lover, or those who want to become one. Classic and casual fish and chips can be eaten in a dreamlike setting. If you like the fish especially well, you can buy some in the restaurant’s own shop directly after the meal.
In the evening for a tasty wine and some tapas. To round off the day, a wonderful breakfast overlooking Lake Taupo is the perfect place. In addition to French toast, granola and yoghurt, there is delicious coffee, smoothies or juices. Those who prefer something more hearty are also served. Location.
Also a nice breakfast café. In Germany you would call it a typical hipster café, but there it just fits in wonderfully. The relaxed surfer vibe combined with industrial charm gives the café the perfect portion of coolness.
The café belongs to a glass blowing workshop. Beside delicious sweet and hearty scones, the glass art can be viewed and bought. For a few dollars you can go to the sculptures garden.
Actually, the Creel Tackle House is an angler’s shop. In addition to all kinds of accessories for daily fishing, there is a cute little café hidden in the back with little snacks for in between. The coffee is one of the best I ever drank.
For a small stop, during the excursion around Lake Taupo this café is great. These small cafés at the roadside are definitely not to be underestimated if you want to eat in New Zealand.
A Cáfe that shines above all with its lunch dishes. Besides delicious bagels and scones, there are salads in countless variations. The small art garden that surrounds the house is enchanting. A nice place to stay in Acacia Bay.
The personal highlight was our “High Tea” at the Chateau. The Chateau is a hotel in Tongariro. Behind it is the mountain range. So the view is breathtaking. The High Tea includes tea as well as scones, macaroons, sandwiches, cakes and much more. The very English and traditional highlight was definitely worth it for us. Even though the food didn’t look like much per se, more than enough was served. In any case tasty and especially recommendable!
